other islands book fair

The Other Islands Book Fair is an annual event hosted by the Pratt Graduate Communication Design department  and serves as a vital platform for local publishers, community builders, designers, artists, and creatives who share a collective commitment to independent publishing to come together and showcase their work.

The brief asked for a system that embodied this idea structurally: a modular, animated logo as the primary mark, designed so its components could stand alone or reassemble into a unified whole, mirroring the fair’s role as a space where independent publishers, graduate scholars, and underrepresented narratives converge and build community outside the mainstream publishing sector. The identity needed to carry this relational logic across both digital and physical touchpoints, translating an academic and curatorial concept into a visual language flexible enough to hold many forms while staying legibly whole.

My proposal draws from literature and symbolism: John Donne's "No man is an island" inspired the theme of interconnectedness and our place within a mutually dependent human system, while the elephant-in-the-boa image from "The Little Prince" informs the visual language, representing boundless creativity and imagination. In an era where human impact on the world is defining, marked by climate uncertainty and political polarization, the work calls for solidarity and understanding of our shared system, using creativity as a force to build new "other islands" that support experimentation, connection, and critical discourse. This identity moves from different directions to coming together, using riso printing to reflect the low-cost, independent spirit of book fair publishing, hand-traced text and frame-by-frame animation to bring a human, handmade quality to the brand, and blurred lines between individuals and the whole to celebrate creative and relational entanglement, all in service of highlighting community building among the fair's diverse exhibitors, independent publishers, and Pratt's Graduate Students.
